Mark Carroll became the second fasted Irish marathon runner of all time after finishing sixth in the New York City Marathon this afternoon.

The 30-year-old finished in a time of 2:10:54 behind Rodgers Rop who led home a Kenyan 1-2-3 in a time of 2:08:06. Christopher Cheboiboch and Laban Kipkemboi finished second and third respectively.

Kenya's Joyce Chepchumba won the women's race in 2:25:56 ahead of Russia's Lyubov Denisova (2:26:17) and Yugoslavia's Olivera Jevlic (2:26:44).

Sonia O'Sullivan featured prominently in the early stages but fell off the pace at the 16 mile marker to finish 12th in a time of 2:32:06.
