An Bord Pleanala has overturned planning permission for a six-metre crucifix to be erected at Carraroe in the Connemara gaeltacht.

Planning permission for the crucifix was granted by Galway County Council last December. It was proposed by the Carraroe Millennium Committee and was to be made of stainless steel. Overturning planning permission, An Bord Pleanala said the location of the proposed crucifix, at Bar an Doire, was in conflict with the provisions of the county development plan. It would be visually intrusive in the landscape and "would therefore be contrary to proper planning and development".

The board also considered that insufficient details of the dimensions of the structure, mounting arrangements and provision of safe pedestrian access had been supplied.
