The Football Association may sanction Cardiff City after the violent scenes that followed the Second Division club's FA Cup third-round win over Leeds United at Ninian Park yesterday.

Four people were arrested, and a South Wales Police spokesman confirmed referee Andy D'Urso and a linesman had both complained about being hit by objects thrown from the crowd.

The FA are expected to begin an investigation, and Cardiff owner Sam Hammam could also face action after spending the latter part of the match behind the Leeds goal at the Grange End of the ground.

Thousands of home fans spilled on to the pitch after the final whistle, and hundreds headed to the away supporters' section and taunted the Leeds fans. They were then driven back by police.

FA spokesman Paul Newman said: "We've got to wait for the referee's report and the report from the police before we decide what to do.

"There could be sanctions against the club if it is deemed they did not stop the crowd being safe and from going on to the pitch".
