A man whose badly burnt body was discovered in Co Monaghan yesterday is thought to have died in a car crash.

Gardaí had difficulty identifying the sex of the body due to the burning, but today they confirmed it was that of a male. The body was found near a burnt-out car at Bragan, near Emyvale, shortly before midnight last night.

Garda sources say foul play is not suspected and it is likely the man died after his car left the road and was set alight after it plunged down a ravine.

The area has been sealed off for a Garda technical examination and the body has been removed to Dublin for postmortem by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy.

It is understood the vehicle was Northern-registered.
