Two young people were killed in the early hours of yesterday morning in a single-vehicle accident in Co Sligo.

Ms Caitriona Conlon (22), from Drumcliff, and Mr Maitis Leonard (26), son of Sligo Fine Gael councillor Mr Joe Leonard, from Clonaghbawn, Ballinful died when the car they were travelling in went out of control and hit a tree.

The accident occurred between Drumcliff and Rathcormack on the N15 from Sligo to Bundoran shortly before 2.30 a.m.

Elsewhere, a young mother of two, who suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run accident in Co Tipperary in the early hours of Sunday morning last, has died.

Ms Siobhan Doyle, of Black Road, Newport, was walking home with two friends after she was struck by a car near her home at around 3 a.m.

The victim in her 20s was rushed by ambulance to Limerick Regional Hospital, where she was put on a life-support machine. Gardaí in Killaloe who are investigating the case said a female motorist was helping them with their inquiries.

Yesterday's fatalities take the total number of deaths on Irish roads to 313 - some 30 higher than this stage last year.

It has emerged that a report - commissioned by the former minister for transport, Mr Brennan - due last month, on the instances of young deaths late at night, has yet to be completed.

The Medical Bureau of Road Safety and Forensic Medicine, based in University College, Dublin, is compiling the report. A spokesman for the bureau said it will be ready before Christmas.
