Two of Northern Ireland's sporting heroes have been awarded honorary degrees from the University of Ulster.

Tyrone's All-Ireland winning captain Peter Canavan and Ireland rugby star David Humphreys will be honoured for their distinguished contribution to sport.

Canavan has long been regarded as one of the greatest ever GAA footballers. The four-time All-Star, who led Tyrone to All-Ireland victory over Armagh in September, said he was delighted to accept the honour on behalf of the Tyrone team.

"It is a great honour to be the first Gaelic footballer to receive an honorary degree from the university," he said. "It is further recognition of our success this year."

Humphreys, currently in Australia for the Rugby World Cup, captained Ulster to their historic European Cup success in 1999 and has been an acclaimed performer for both province and country since his debut in 1996.

Both players will receive an honorary doctorate at the university's winter graduation ceremonies on December 16th.
