There have been new calls to reopen Kerry’s sexual assault unit, which has been closed for more than five years, Tralee councillor Norma Foley said the hugely traumatic experience of rape and assault was added to by the fact that victims had to take a long car journey to Cork and sometimes further to be assessed. On one occasion last year, a victim had to travel to Waterford.

She said every pressure should be put on the minister for Health and the HSE to have the unit reopened.
