Labour leader Eamon Gilmore is seeking urgent talks with all political party chiefs over the controversial expenses of Ceann Comhairle John O’Donoghue, it emerged tonight.
The latest revelations of taxpayers’ money being spent on perks including top class flights, limousines and VIP airport lounges, suggested an unacceptable pattern of extravagance, he said.
Mr Gilmore said he was now concerned the entire political system could be seriously damaged by the continuing disclosures.
“I have been cautious to date about commenting on this controversy because of my respect for the independence of office of Ceann Comhairle,” he said.
“I have also acknowledged that Deputy John O’Donoghue has discharged his duties as Ceann Comhairle in the Dáil in a fair and impartial manner.
“However, I am concerned that if the current controversy continues serious damage will be done to the office of Ceann Comhairle, to the Dáil and to our democratic system.”
Mr Gilmore said it was necessary for the Dáil to deal with the rumbling controversy and he is calling for a meeting of all party leaders to decide what action should be taken.
Expenses records revealed on Friday showed Mr O’Donoghue had claimed more than €200,000 in expenses, on top of his salary, over the last two years.
The Fianna Fáil Kerry TD booked himself into exclusive hotels, dined at posh restaurants and claimed back thousands of euro for hiring limousines and cars, and tipping drivers.
Mr O’Donoghue, who last month apologised and admitted he was embarrassed by lavish expenses he ran up while tourism minister, chose to publish his claims since becoming Ceann Comhairle on the day of the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
