The Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) has called for an improvement in driver behaviour following a collision between a car and a Luas tram near Capel Street, Dublin, yesterday.

The accident happened at around 10.30 a.m. between the junction of Jervis Street and Capel Street on the new Luas line to Tallaght.

The line has not yet opened, but is undergoing tests. Trams are running every 10 minutes before the service begins next month.

It is understood the car drove across the path of the line, hitting the tram. No one was hurt and the damage to both vehicles has been described as minimal. The tram was taken back to the terminus at the Red Cow roundabout for inspection.

This is the second Luas mishap in three days. On Saturday a tram left the rails at St Stephen's Green. No one was injured.

RPA spokesman Mr Tom Manning said yesterday: "We hope people will be very familiar with the Luas by now, with the amount of horn blowing and bell ringing, but we're still very keen for driver discipline to improve."
