The Minister for Health and Children, Mr Martin, should determine the "full facts" in the inquiry set up to investigate the retention of babies' organs following post-mortems, according to a Fine Gael TD.

Mr Dan Neville, the party's spokesman on children, said the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children should intervene to prevent the collapse of the inquiry, which was announced in April.

Mr Neville said the policies of several of the State's hospitals needed to be investigated for the sake of the dead children's families.

"Relatives of dead children are deeply distressed, consider their loved ones violated and their trust in the State misplaced.

"It is incumbent on the Minister for Health and Children to ensure that the full facts are known. The present situation with the inquiry will not facilitate this," he said.

"What is the point of having a committee that cannot identify the hospitals involved or the pharmaceutical companies which were manufacturing growth hormone from pituitary glands which were taken from some of the bodies?" he asked.
