Residents of Inishbiggle island, off Co Mayo, have expressed disappointment at the decision of Mayo County Council to refuse planning permission for a £760,000 cable car link.

The ruling means that the 73 islanders will have to continue making the dangerous 400 yard crossing from Achill island in open currachs as there is no regular ferry. The island manager, Mr Pol O Foighil, said the islanders would fight the decision.
