C of I to open church in Kerry

The first Church of Ireland church to be opened in Kerry since the 1860s will be consecrated on September 20th

The first Church of Ireland church to be opened in Kerry since the 1860s will be consecrated on September 20th. The project, to include a social centre, is the church's first integrated spiritual and social development in the Republic.

The country's Church of Ireland population has recently stabilised at 440,000 after many years of decline, particularly in the Republic.

During the past 12 years, a Church Commission closed about 50 churches as part of a radical rationalisation programme which arose from having 1,200 churches for about 600 clergy.

Many were estate churches in remote areas. Some were in inner cities.

About eight or nine had been opened in suburban areas in the Republic over the same period, according to a church spokeswoman.

The Killorglin church is necessary because of growing numbers from other denominations who have begun attending Church of Ireland services there.

The Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe, Dr Edward Darling, will perform the consecration ceremony on September 20th.

The preacher will be the Church of Ireland Primate of All-Ireland, Dr Robin Eames, and singing will be led by the choir of St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick.

The church is part of a 3,900 sq ft parish worship and social centre which will also include three halls, meeting rooms, toilets, showers, and a kitchen.

Architect Mr Peter O'Farrelly designed the building which will cost £450,000, £310,000 of which has been raised already.

A cross-community fund-raising committee hopes to have raised the balance by the consecration date.
