US President George W. Bush said he was committed to a strong dollar and the currency would strengthen eventually thanks to his economic policies.
"The policies of my administration are directed at strengthening the dollar," he said in an interview with Russian television broadcast this morning.
Mr Bush will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow.
The interview echoed comments published in France's Le Figaronewspaper yesterday. Mr Bush told the paper he would tell the G8 he was still committed to a strong dollar.
"We believe that correct financial policies will lead to growth in the economy and that the market will respond to economic growth by strengthening the dollar," Mr Bush said.
He said the dollar's fall was contrary to the administration's policies.
The dollar has tumbled against the euro in recent months and hit all-time lows earlier this week as markets fretted over the US deficit and worried that the government was happy to let the currency slide.
