White House spokesman Mr Ari Fleischer was confident today the Bush administration would prevail in a suit brought by the General Accounting Office to gain access to documents surrounding the formulation of the federal energy policy.

"The president will stand strong on principles," Mr Fleischer said. "The White House will fight for its right in a court of law and the White House expects to prevail."

The General Accounting Office, which serves as the investigative arm of the US Congress, said earlier it would file suit against the administration to obtain documents about the energy policy, as questions swirled about corporate influence on the White House from companies such as fallen energy giant Enron.
