The US State Department has saidthat an inspection of the site where Burmese opposition leader AungSan Suu Kyi was detained last weekend points to a "premeditatedambush" by "government affiliated thugs."
The Nobel peace laureate was arrested by the country's military junta during a political tour and is being held incommunicado at a military camp outside Myanmar's capital, Yangon, according to reports from the region.
Officials from the US Embassy in Yangon visited the site of the May 30 "violent attack on Aung San Suu Kyi and her traveling party," State Department spokesman Philip Reeder said in a statement.
"Their findings indicate that there was a premeditated ambush on Aung San Suu Kyi's motorcade," it said. "Circumstances and reports from individuals in the region indicate that the attack was conducted by government-affiliated thugs.
"We call on the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) in Burma to provide a full accounting of the dead, injured, and missing," said the statement.
"The continued detention in isolation of Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of her political party is outrageous and unacceptable.
We call on the SPDC to release them immediately," the statement added.
The arrest of the National League for Democracy came afterclashes between her supporters and a military-backed group. Themilitary reported four deaths in the disturbances, but sources inthe country said several dozen people may have died.
