The Fine Gael leader is gathering support for his call to party leaders to sign a statement calling on Liam Lawlor to resign his Dáil seat.

Both the Labour leader, Mr Ruairi Quinn, and the Green Party’s Mr Trevor Sargent have agreed to sign the proposed statement.

John Bruton: Calling on Liam Lawlor to resign his Dail seat

Mr John Bruton has written to all party leaders seeking their support and is awaiting a response from the Taoiseach Mr Ahern and the Tánaiste Ms Harney.

"It is not really viable for someone who as a legislator helped establish a tribunal to assist the Dáil in seeking the truth, should continue as a legislator, once he has been shown to have obstructed that same tribunal," he said.

"He is compromised as a legislator." Mr Quinn added: "The public are aghast at the events which have taken place over the last few days. People think it's very strange that someone who has been found in contempt of court should still be allowed to walk into Dáil Eireann. It is proper and appropriate that he should resign now."
