THE Brixton Prison escaper Nessan Quinlivan was refused bail by the Special Criminal Court yesterday after the court heard that he was "an active, leading member of the IRA."
Det Insp John Kerins opposed bail and said that Quinlivan would not turn up for his trial and would intimidate witnesses.
Quinlivan (31), of Knockalisheen Ave, Ballynanty Beg, Limerick, is charged with falsely imprisoning Mr Michael Lyons at Garryowen, Limerick, on August 25th last year.
Det Insp Kerins said he had received confidential information from two people in the republican movement that Quinlivan would not stand trial if given bail.
"He is an active, leading member of the IRA. He has access to firearms. Threats have been issued to the injured party," he said.
Det Supt William Emerton, of Scotland Yard's anti-terrorist branch, told the court that Quinlivan was wanted in Britain for conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to cause explosions, escaping from prison and wounding with intent.
He said the charges carried a maximum of life imprisonment and Quinlivan could expect to serve up to 25 years if convicted.
Det Supt Emerton said that Quinlivan and another man had used a gun during an escape from Brixton Prison in July 1991.
Mr Justice Johnson, presiding, said the court accepted the evidence of the gardai that if granted bail Quinlivan would not turn up for his trial.
He remanded him in custody - until July 16th.
