British police are investigating an attempted robbery at the London offices of the Japanese bank Sumitomo that was reported to involve £220 million (€316 million).
The Financial Times said a gang hacked into Sumitomo's computers last October and unsuccessfully tried to transfer the money electronically to 10 bank accounts round the world.
"There is an ongoing investigation into an attempted robbery at the London offices of Sumitomo, but we cannot comment further," said a spokeswoman for Britain's National High Tech Crime Unit.
The Financial Times said the gang had tried to transfer £20 million to Israel where a man had been arrested.
