Mexican police have arrested a British citizen wanted by the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Police detained Amer Haykel in the city of La Paz, in the northern state of Baja California Sur, said Mexico's attorney general's office.

Haykel "according to US authorities is linked to extremist groups presumably involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York," the attorney general said.

The statement did not say when Haykel was arrested or what specifically he was accused of doing. It also did not say how long he had been in Mexico.

Haykel has been brought to Mexico City for legal procedures, the attorney general said.
