London - More than a million animals slaughtered during Britain's foot-and-mouth crisis might have been spared had efficient culling been implemented sooner, scientists said yesterday.

New studies of the epidemic, which led to the killing of four million animals, show culling was essential.

But it could have been reduced by 16 per cent and the number of livestock killed by 30 per cent, they claim.
