Minister for Social Affairs Séamus Brennan is to attend ceremonies in Madrid tomorrow to mark first anniversary of the train bombings that killed 192 people and injured nearly 2,000.

"I am bringing with me the heartfelt sympathy of the Irish people," Mr Brennan said.

"In recent past, my country paid a high price at the hands of terrorism. We, in Ireland, understand the pain of the Spanish people and share their belief that, no matter the cause, terrorism can never be justified," he added.

As part of the events to mark the anniversary, the Club de Madrid is holding an international seminar on terrorism.

Club de Madrid is a private organisation led by prominent international figures, including former US president Bill Clinton and former president, Mary Robinson.

Tomorrow, the Spanish government will plant 192 trees, one for each of the victims, at the Retiro park in the centre of the city.
