GARDAI in Connemara, Co Galway, have exposed a scam involving a gang who have been hailing down tourists on the pretence that their vehicles have broken down or been involved in an accident, and then seeking money.
Mr Basil Keogh, from Maam Cross, who first alerted the authorities, has written to the Minister for Tourism and Trade, Mr Kenny, warning of the damage that could be done to tourism in the west if the problem was not tackled quickly and effectively.
"Some individuals lay down on the road feigning injury, while others parked their cars in the middle of the road pretending to have run out of petrol.
"Unsuspecting tourists who stopped were asked for money. Where it was refused, these people became abusive and threatening. Tourists told us they were very frightened and shaken."
A Garda spokesman in Clifden confirmed that complaints had been fully investigated. Summonses for begging offences had been issued in some cases. "Those involved seem to have moved on, as the problem has abated over the past week," he added.
Such behaviour could also have unfortunate consequences for those who genuinely have a breakdown and were in need of help, he said.
