A really friendly wine - that's how I think of Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia 1997 (widely available, usually about £9.49). Plenty of lovely ripe berry flavours and a good whack of vanillin and spicy oak come together smoothly in a warm, supple red with immediate appeal. Bets don't come much safer than this.
