ROME - Mr Umberto Bossi and his Northern League separatists found widespread sympathy in Italy yesterday in the wake of a police raid on their Milan headquarters in which several supporters were injured.

The police swooped on the building in Via Bellerio on Wednesday with a warrant to look for "anti constitutional material", in particular any written evidence of the League's stated plans to set up an independent national guard for its statelet of Padania.
