A bomb threat at the US embassy in central Paris sent explosives experts rushing to the scene, but police said early indications pointed to a simple telephone threat.
The bomb squad found nothing suspicious, a police spokesman said.
Soon after the alert was lifted, normal security measures resumed with about six French policemen outside and regular checks on entering the gated grounds.
Metal crowd-control fences and other security measures set up after the September 11th attacks in the United States remained in place.

The embassy was allegedly the target of an attack plotted by a network of Islamic extremists operating in France last year.
