Seven families were forced to spend last night away from their homes after being evacuated in a bomb alert just outside Armagh. A British army bomb disposal expert carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious object under a tarpaulin on a trailer.

The vehicle had been abandoned behind a hedge on the Hamiltonsbawn Road half a mile from an army barracks. When night fell, the bomb expert decided that it was too dangerous to continue and sealed off the area. The clearance operation is due to resume this morning.
