Cape Town - The South African anti-apartheid icon, Allan Boesak, got a hero's welcome at the gates of prison yesterday as he began a three-year jail term for theft and fraud.

Within hours, he was moved to another prison where he will come face to face with the accountant whose evidence helped convict him. "I go to prison this morning knowing that I am innocent," Boesak, accompanied by his wife, Elna, told a crowd of warders, local dignitaries and supporters that met him at the gates of Pollsmoor Prison, his initial destination.
