The body of Pope John Paul will lay in state for public viewing in St Peter's Basilica from Monday afternoon at the earliest, the Vatican said.

The Pope received the Roman Catholic sacrament reserved for the sick and dying before passing away on Saturday evening in his Vatican apartment, it said in a statement.

The sacrament, which involves anointing the sick person with special oils, was once called "Last Rites" or "Extreme Unction".

It is now known as the Sacrament of the Infirm.
