The body of the first American known to have died in combat in Afghanistan has arrived back home.

CIA agent Mr Johnny Spann died during an uprising by Taliban prisoners in a fortress in Mazar-e-Sharif.

His widow, children and parents went inside for a private moment when the aircraft carrying the body arrived at Andrews Air Force Base.

CIA director Mr George Tenet, who had been overseas on business, accompanied Mr Spann's body from Germany.

The 32-year-old was believed to be involved in the Northern Alliance interrogation of prisoners inside the fort when the uprising started.

The CIA has not commented on his activities at the prison.
