The Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Malin received a call from a member of the public at 11.15 am to say a fisherman had come across an upturned currach near Aughrus Point, close to Omey Island.

A search involving Clifden offshore and inshore lifeboats, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter from Shannon and Sligo, a spotter plane and around 15 local vessels began shortly afterwards.

The first man's body was discovered at around 2.20 pm this afternoon about a mile from where the upturned currach was first located. A second body was located a short time ago.

the search has now been scaled back.

It is believed that the two men set off from a small pier at the headland at about 8.30am this morning to check lobster pots close to the Atlantic shoreline.
