LONDON - The leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, Mr Tony Blair, promised yesterday he would strive to bring down the Conservative government of the Prime Minister, Mr John Major, to allow elections to take place soon.

He said in his new year message that he and his party would work to "topple the government in any way we can so that a general election could take place "as soon as possible". It was necessary "to restore a firm and coherent government".
