Efforts are continuing off the south-west coast of Ireland tonight to save survivors from a school of up to 40 whales washed up on a beach in Co Kerry.

At least 17 of the long-finned bottle-nosed whales died when they were washed ashore at Aughacasla Strand near Tralee. It is not clear whether the whales died on the beach or at sea.

Fenit Lifeboat and Dingle Coastguard are attempting to guide the remaining whales back out to sea.
