Cricket: England were thankful to Ian Bell for repairing the damage of a mid-afternoon collapse in the third Test at Old Trafford.

Faced with a tumble of four wickets for 49, Warwickshire batsman Bell shared a 98-run stand with Matt Prior (40) and finished a day, which West Indies edged, unbeaten on 77.

England, who lead the npower series 1-0, closed on 296 for seven after Michael Vaughan opted to bat. Opener Alastair Cook hit 60 before becoming debutant Darren Sammy's maiden international victim.
