BRUSSELS - The Belgian deputy prime minister, Mr Elio Di Rupo, responding to press reports that police were investigating a possible sex scandal, denied yesterday that he had been involved in paedophile acts.

"It would seem that I am the victim of a mix up and confusion between events in my private life, which do nobody harm, and disgusting, outrageous acts which people want to attribute to me," he said in a statement.
