Belfast priest killed in South African home

A Catholic priest from Belfast was killed in his home in South Africa today.

A Catholic priest from Belfast was killed in his home in South Africa today.

Rev Manus Campbell (70) was beaten to death by intruders after he disturbed them while they were committing burglary. They escaped with household items including a television.

Rev Campbell house adjoined Our Lady Star Of The Sea church in Amanzimtoti, near Durban, where he served along with another priest.

The Belfast man has been working in South Africa since 1958 but regularly visited family and friends in his home town.

South African police say six people have been detained in connection with the incident.
