A bomb alert in north Belfast which resulted in a number of homes being evacuated has been declared a “deliberate hoax”.

The security operation began in the Old Park Road area yesterday evening following reports that a device had been abandoned in the area.

It was declared a hoax this afternoon after no device was found and both the police and British army technical officers have left the area.

Affected residents who stayed in the Ardoyne Community Centre overnight have now returned to their homes.

It is understood a call was made to the Samaritans on Monday night saying a device had been left in the area.
