Benares - Hundreds of fans and journalists stood vigil yesterday in the Hindu holy city of Benares for the immersion of former Beatle George Harrison's ashes into the Ganges river.

Harrison was a long-time devotee of the Hindu Hare Krishna sect and was closely attached to Benares. The Beatles' former lead guitarist died last Thursday of cancer, aged 58. Harrison's widow, Olivia, and son, Dhani, were to scatter some of the ashes yesterday morning in a "discreet" ceremony.

But local officials and Hare Krishna leaders refused to confirm when and where along the Ganges the ceremony would take place.
