Harare - The former Zimbabwean president, Canaan Banana, was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in jail with hard labour for sodomy and indecent assault, but with nine years suspended.

The High Court ordered Banana (62) to pay restitution to a former aide he was convicted of abusing. He was also ordered to pay compensation to the family of a policeman shot dead by the aide for taunting him over his involuntary homosexual relationship with the then head of state. The court granted him leave to appeal and left him under house arrest, where he has been for a month.
