Ballina sees leap in salmon catch

Ballina is claiming a unique European angling record, a catch of 1,185 salmon in the past week

Ballina is claiming a unique European angling record, a catch of 1,185 salmon in the past week. The official figures for the River Moy were released yesterday by the North Western Regional Fisheries Board.

More than half the catch was taken in the salmon pool in Ballina town. Angling catches have soared since the Central Fisheries Board stopped netting operations on the river last year.

It is estimated that a salmon caught by an overseas tourist is worth £500 to the economy.
