A man accused of blackmailing a businessman to give the UDA £1,000 sterling was refused bail in the High Court in Belfast yesterday.

Mr William Boreland (30), from Sunningdale Gardens, Belfast, was alleged to have told the businessman that if he did not pay up he could suffer the same fate as a local pub manager who had the windows of her home and car smashed.

The court was told a block was later thrown through the front window of the businessman's premises and his car was severely damaged.
