Baghdad blast believed to be gas explosion

A blast in a residential area incentral Baghdad this evening killed at least one person,police at the scene told reporters.

A house was ablaze following the blast and flames werespreading to neighbouring buildings. Firefighters were on thescene to tackle the blaze.

US officials said the blast was caused by a gas explosion.

On Monday, coordinated suicide car bomb attacks on theInternational Committee of the Red Cross and three policestations killed at least 35 people, in the bloodiest day inBaghdad since Saddam Hussein was toppled in April.

The previous day, a rocket attack on a hotel used by topmilitary and civilian officials in the US-led administrationkilled a soldier and wounded more than a dozen people.
