If we as a nation failed to ensure that the Olympic triple gold medalist, Michelle de Bruin, was not provided with whatever financial resources and professional help were required to clear her name, we would not be worthy of our heroines and heroes, Mr Labhras O Murchu (FF), said.

The Government must take steps to protect and defend someone who was "one of our national treasures", he said.

"We rejoiced in her victories. We shared in her credit and we basked in the glory of her achievements. I think it would be wrong now at this stage to run for cover. I think the nation's head should be put above the parapet." O Murchu added.

Describing the swimmer as someone who had brought terrific honour to this country, the Leader of the House, Mr Donie Cassidy, said he agreed with the call by his party colleague. Everything should be done to clear her name. The provision of the necessary financial resources should be made, "if that be the right thing to do, as it will turn out, in time".
