ULAN BATOR - Mongolia's former communist rulers dealt a crushing defeat to the ruling democrats in presidential polls when their candidate beat the incumbent, Mr Punsalmaagiin Ochirbat, officials said yesterday.

Preliminary results showed Mr Natsagiin Bacabandi (47), of the opposition Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party, had won a decisive 60.79 per cent of the vote in Sunday's polls.
