Vienna - The Austrian government formally asked the European Commission yesterday to allow it to ban German beef imports after a second case of mad cow disease was confirmed in Germany, an official said.
The Commission has already been informed of the request. If it does not reject the demand within 24 hours, Austria will press on with a ban on all beef and related products from Germany with immediate effect.
