At least 30 more Muslims have been burned alive in the western Indian state of Gujarat as troops struggle to quell the worst communal bloodshed in 10 years.

A mob of about 3,000 suspected Hindus have attacked the village of Pandarwal, burning Muslims to death in their homes.

They have set fire to more houses and shops in a village in the western state, killing at least 30 trapped inside.

The mob from an adjoining village stormed Sardarpura in Mehsana district Friday night and set the houses and shops on fire using cooking gas bottles.

The latest mass murder pushes up even further the death toll in India's worst religious strife in a decade.

Reporters say police fired bullets in the air to scare away the mob, which regrouped as soon as the police patrol left.

The killings take the death toll in three days of carnage in Gujarat to 322.

A senior police official said it was proving to difficult to send security forces in to every village in Gujarat.

"If the violence spreads to the countryside it could really go out of hand," he said.
