At least 12 people were killed in Rome when a bus carrying tourists from Turkey ran off the road and crashed into a ravine.

The tourists were returning to their hotel after dining out when the bus, carrying about 30 people, crashed shortly after 11pm local time yesterday (10pm Irish time).

The bus fell about 66 feet into the garden of a home in north-western Rome.

An official said rescue workers freed some of the tourists who were trapped in the wreckage and took them to hospital.
