London - Waves of wouldbe refugees pushed the number of applications for asylum in Britain last year to a record level, official figures confirmed yesterday.
The total number of applications reached 46,015, up more than 40 per cent on the 1997 figure of 32,500. The figure beat the previous highest set in 1991 when 44,840 people sought asylum.
