The ASTI has voted to delay issuing a directive to members on withdrawing from supervision and substitution work in secondary schools until November 5th.
At a meeting of the Central Executive Council today, union President Ms Catherine Fitzpatrick said the delay would give the Government time to come back to ASTI and for the issue to be reviewed.
Earlier the Executive said it remeains committed to obtaining a salary increase for members and will continue to lobby on their behalf in the coming weeks.
The union has left it open to members to decide whether or not to participate in voluntary supervision & substition.
However the possibility of further strike action remains if the issue is not resolved by November 5th.
General Secretary Mr Charlie Lennon rejected suggestions that the union was split on the issue and described today's meeting as "constructive".
Yesterday primary teachers' union the INTO voted to ballot members on the Government's offer of £27 an hour for supervision/substitution. The executive of the union is recommending acceptance of the offer. ASTI members were not offered a ballot on the £27 offer.
