The victim of an assault in Cork city last week died yesterday in hospital.

Mr Walter Black (58), a homeless man, was injured in a fight with a woman, also believed to be homeless, at Academy Street on June 25th. He sustained head injuries and was taken to the Southern Infirmary Hospital, where his life-support machine was switched off at 2.30 p.m. yesterday.

The assistant State pathologist, Dr Marie, Cassidy, will conduct a post-mortem today.

Gardaí investigating the case have interviewed a woman and sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions. They believe the victim and his attacker were both inebriated and that Mr Black was thrown against a dust bin, sustaining serious wounds to his head.

Mr Black had been living rough for a number of years and efforts were under way last night to contact family members to arrange his funeral.
