Army bomb unit make safe bombs on Kerry beach

Members of the army bomb disposal unit have made safe two unexploded bombs on a beach in Co Kerry.

The bombs are understood to date from 1916. The objects were discovered on Rossbeigh beach yesterday evening and are believed to have been washed up from the sea.

An army spokesman said they could date as far back as World War I - coming from sunken ships breaking up off the coast.

Two illuminating shells used by the British army to light up the coastline were first found and subsequently the two live shells were found.

Gardaí sealed off the area and a controlled explosion was carried out by the army disposal unit to make the area safe.
